Sammy the Hammy is a genetic experiment gone horribly awry. Sammy is part of the ship’s equipment (he’s the engine) as well as a member of the crew. For this reason, Ralph never bothered giving him a name and he remained known as “Hamster 42” for much of his life.

Hamster 42, as his former name suggests, was the 42nd experiment to create a hamster who was powerful enough to run on a giant wheel to power a spaceship, intelligent enough to follow commands, but still dumb enough not to question Ralph’s often unreasonable requests.

He also has an almost insatiable appetite.
