Melonpool is the story of three aliens, a clone, a telepathic dog, a robotic pop star and a 220-lb hamster who try to blend into Earth society. It has also been described (perhaps more aptly) as “Star Trek meets Gilligan’s Island.”
Don’t Let the Big Archive Intimidate You
Melonpool began on the Internet on April 28, 1996. making it one of the oldest webcomics. Don’t let the 2000+ comic archive intimidate you — here are a few ways to get up to speed:
Melonpool Crash Course! The first seven years of the webcomic, abridged into 32 pages. Each panel is linked to that section of the archives, making it easy to jump to the part that has you wanting more.
Inept captain of The Steel Duck. Mayberry’s duties include being an all-around scapegoat, janitor and the main source of communication between the pilot that can’t use the radio and engineering. Obsessed with Star Trek, he happily does whatever it takes to remain captain.
Ralph Zinobop
Somewhat evil, coffee-addicted heir to the Zinoboppian throne. Ralph built The Steel Duck while in exile, in hopes of revolutionizing the Planet Zinobop’s fossil fuel dependence and reclaiming his rightful place as the King of Zinobop. Instead, he got stranded on Earth following the experimental ship’s maiden voyage.
Sam T. Dogg
Former test pilot and the only member of the crew that possesses common sense. Sam is forever hindered by the fact that he resembles a common domesticated dog. A telepathic, hat-wearing, hyper-intelligent dog — but a dog, nonetheless.
Sammy The Hammy
One of Ralph’s experiments gone horribly awry. Sammy basically eats and sleeps when he’s not called into service as The Steel Duck’s engine — which consists of running on a 12-foot hamster wheel to power the ship.
Roberta Smeffinfeffer
Stranded on Earth by the mysterious GRAISE, Roberta met up with The Steel Duck on their initial crash landing and quickly assumed the role of ship’s doctor — even though she barely has any medical training. Seemingly the only member of the crew capable of remaining gainfully employed Roberta puts up with a crew of male chauvinist pigs because she sees them as her only ticket home.
Ralphie Zinobop
Ralphie Zinobop is a clone of Ralph, the product of one of his failed experiments. While Ralph is basically evil (or at least, in a bad mood all the time), Ralphie is kind, caring, sympathetic… basically everything that Ralph isn’t. Ralphie and Roberta have gotten quite close over the years — even producing an offspring as the result of a time paradox.
Jalea Bates
A former pop-singing Protocol droid, Jalea is the closest thing to a human aboard The Steel Duck. Ever since being involved in a bizarre accident which transformed her into a live human, she’s dedicated her life to finding out the meaning of life — as well as the truth about her origins…
The Steel Duck
Built by Ralph Zinobop, the ZSC-1 (Zinobop Space Craft One) was designed to revolutionize space flight by utilizing the Cricetus Gigantus Dymo to negatively-charged ions to propel a 108-foot ship through the cosmos. Unfortunately, after she was painted green, she resembled, more than anything else, a giant duck — a name that’s stuck to this very day.
